Friday Fives: Crawling

Tristan is now so good at crawling that I can barely remember a time when he was immobile. He’s constantly zipping around the house, pulling himself up on furniture, cruising along the couch, and trying to grab things off tables and desks. If I need to pee, I find myself staring at him, wondering, “How focused is he on this activity? Do I have time to run to the toilet before he crawls across the room and dismantles the bookshelf?” Invariably, the answer is no.

Though, to be honest, “crawl” is not the best word for his method of locomotion. Instead of pushing off with both knees, he uses his right knee and his left foot. So he has this hurky-jurky stiff-legged crawl that looks awkward, but is very effective. It’s funny when he crawls someplace dirty, as his right shin and the top of his right foot will be filthy, along with the bottom of his left toes.

A side benefit of this type of crawling, is he’s really good at dealing with rough and painful surfaces. He’s learned to get up on both toes, and move across in a sort of downward dog walk, so he doesn’t have to drag his leg and knee across it. It’s pretty hilarious.

Here are Tristan’s five best things about being mobile.

  1. I can get to any cord in the house, anywhere, any time.
  2. I can get away from Sophie when she wants to pull my hair.
  3. It’s fun to take the remote controls for a walk, and leave them where mom and dad can’t find them.
  4. It’s easier for me to keep an eye on the washing machine, which can be loud and scary sometimes.
  5. Playing tag around the house with daddy is funny!
